Nose: Medium(+) aromas of grapefruit, cotton candy, and lychee with a hint of cut grass

Palate: Very dry, medium bodied, medium acid, leaner texture. Light flavors of lemon and orange peel with notes of lychee. The phenolics can be a bit harsh, especially on the finish. Medium(-) complexity, medium balance.

Simple and clean with a beautifully fragrant nose, although the flavors are a bit weaker and the phenolics can be slightly overpowering. But overall, an enjoyable wine

A beautiful wine still going strong, an interesting version of Vermentino which can age -how long is a good question. Not typical but goes to show that serious wine can be made from this grape.

Wine tasting 24/11

Held a wine tasting where the theme was Chardonnay from different parts of the world. We tried six different producers where my idea was to pit a Premier Cru from Burgundy against five other producers to blindly test and see what possible differences we could find.
All six wines have gone through malolactic fermentation and all have been aged for a certain amount of time in oak barrels. All but one wine (By Farr) has been on its lees (Sur Lie). All wines were decanted 30 – 60 minutes before tasting.

Three of the wines come from several different vineyard locations:

House of Smith – Sixto Uncovered Chardonnay 2019
USA / Washington State / Columbia Valley.
Alcohol 14.0%
Calera Chardonnay Central Coast 2021
USA / California / Central Coast
Alcohol 14.5%
Failla Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 2019
USA / California / Sonoma County
Alcohol 13.5%

Three of the wines came from a specific vineyard location:

Les Héritiers Saint-Genys Mercurey 1er Cru Clos Marcilly Blanc 2019
France / Burgundy / Côte Chalonnaise / Mercurey

Gala Vinnarstvi Chardonnay Hermes 2020
Czech Republic / Moravia / Perná

I presented all the wines first, origin, terroir, what altitude and a little about the philosophy of the respective winemaker. Then we tested all the wines blindly where everyone had to decide their respective top three wines for the evening;

No prices were revealed before the tasting, but everyone was looking for the wine from Burgundy, thinking it would be the most expensive. All six wines were very good, and very difficult to distinguish in many ways. No over oaked wines (phew) but good fruit and more or less well-balanced oak.

After scoring, the outcome was as follows:

Failla Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 2019 - 0 points (my score 90 p)
House of Smith – Sixto Uncovered Chardonnay 2019 - 2 points (my score 89 p)
Calera Chardonnay Central Coast 2021 - 6 points (my score 90 p)
Les Héritiers Saint-Genys Mercurey 1er Cru Clos Marcilly Blanc 2019 - 8 points (my score 92 p)
Gala Vinnarstvi Chardonnay Hermes 2020 - 10 points (my score 91 p)
By Farr Chardonnay 2021 - 10 points (my score 93 p)

Compilation

Blind tasting is incredibly interesting, and difficult, but usually gives a fairly fair picture of the wines. What we found most interesting was that all three wines that were specific vineyard locations ended up in the top 3.

What surprised many was that the Czech wine from Vinnartsi Gala shared first place, I was not surprised, one of my favorites for sublime well-balanced Chardonnay. That By Farr's Chardonnay also ends up at the top was not surprising, here it is the terroir that really ends up in the first place, limestone, limestone...limestone, the fruit is also extremely elegant. Those of you who have not tried By Farr's Pinot Noir should do so, very fine wines.
In third place Premier Cru Héritiers Saint-Genys, a wine that really performed and would probably have been rated higher a few hours later with a little more time in the glass.
Also have to give + points to the Caleras Chardonnay, near the podium, a clear fruit that appealed to many. But as said before, all six wines were very good, small margins. A very appreciated test, and instructive.

And the price level of these wines, cheapest Calera with its SEK 279, most expensive By Farr SEK 580. All wines purchased at SB except Gala which is bought in the Czech Republic.

Then the evening ended with three very good red wines:

Failla Pinor Noir Lola 2017 (my score 92 p)
Two Handes Shiraz Ares 2014 (my score 91 p)
Lunae Niccolo V 2016 (my score 91 p) - Great wine for €25

Similar in style and flavor profile to the previously enjoyed 2019 vintage. Beautiful balance of red fruits and minerality. Requires air (or a short decant) and lighter food. Displays a bright, clear, medium salmon color. Leads aromatically with rocky red granite, juicy strawberry, ripe raspberry, tangy tangerine, fresh melon, and anise. Lively palate with fresh strawberries and raspberries, tangy tangerines, crunchy yellow melons, and wet, salty, red granite. Medium plus acidity provides freshness and supports a long, mouthwatering finish. Enjoyed with jalapeño dip and crackers. Very good at an excellent QPR. Drink through 2025+.

pale lemon, clean and clear colour. very good. nose: very clean. Citrus fruits: white grapefruit, pomelo. herbs: geraniu8m camomile, sage, field flowers. very fresh. taste: high acidity, light body and high flavor intensity. crisp apples, pomelo, underripe peach, grapes, lime, lemon. long finish. Crispy, fresh, complex. Not only summer wine but of course will do excellent on a hot day.

light ruby colour with red cherry reflexes; clear and clean. nose: red and black cherries, some musky aromas, black pepper, smoke. medium (+) intensity. taste: high acidity; medium soft tannins (elegant); RED/BLACK cherries, red plums - tart fruits; medium body; fresh of an excellent drinkability; medium (+) floral finish. Excellent either solo or with food.

medium lemon, clear and shiny colour. nose: super-concentrated. herbal - geranium, sage, rosemary. Some vegetal notes - tomato leaf asparagus. Fruit- aplle, lemons, lemon zest. great intensity. taste: high acidity, full body - wine is fat. lemons, apples, white pear, white grapefruit. Medium (+) herbal (sage) finish. Some bergamot notes. Excellent.

Caroline Wine Shop - Italy - Various (Carolines Wine Shop): Mid straw in colour, the nose is open-knitted, gently perfumed expression that initially shows melted plastic but seems to blow over. The palate meanwhile, has a resin, balsamic note with honey, quince and cheese rind edges that are intriguing. It flows nicely with a vigorous acidity thread. It is an interesting tasting experience and closes with a combination of grassy, green notes, celery stalk and that mid-palate mixture morphing to nougat.

Helles grüngelb mit verführerischem Duft erinnernd an reife Südfrüchte wie Zitrone, Pfirsich und Grapefruit, begleitet von einem Hauch weisser Blüten sowie vegetabiler und pfeffriger Note. Am Gaumen eröffnet eine knackige Säure untermalt mit frischem Fruchtextrakt und geschmeidiger Textur, gefolgt von frischem sowie appetitanregendem, würzigem Ausklang. Im Standard Weisswein Glas bei kühlen 9-11°C servieren.

Seine frische Säure macht den Wein zum idealen Einstiegsbegleiter in eine Speisefolge: Crostini mit Frischkäse, Bruschette al pomodoro oder Grissini mit Rohschinken umwickelt harmonieren wunderbar. Aber auch zu angemachten Salaten, grilliertem Meerfisch sowie zu lokalen Spezialitäten wie Gnocchi ai frutti di mare passt er hervorragend.

Die Colli di Luni liegen rund um die gleichnamige Stadt in Ligurien und ziehen sich bis in die einen Steinwurf entfernte Toscana hinein. Das Klima hier ist spürbar mediterran, kühlende Brisen vom Mittelmehr sorgen für kühle Nächte und trocknen die Feuchtigkeit aus den Rebzeilen. Vermentino ist die wichtigste Sorte und liefert frische Weissweine, welche jung am besten munden. Einige Exemplare werden auf der Hefe oder in grossen Holzfässern gelagert, wodurch sie mehr Komplexität entwickeln.

ruby shiny, clean colour - excellent. nose: chicken stock, umami aromas plus very ripe red and black cherries, black plums; herbs - rosemary, thyme; very intense, clean. taste: high acidity; still a lot of fruits present - plums, black cherries, black berries; spice - cinnamon, cloves; excellent, ripe tannins. long finish. Perfect.

Refreshing, excellent with my Miso Sable fish dish.
Lt gold in colour, good acidity. Typical flavours of green apple, citrus, maybe a touch of grapefruit. This starts with a sweetness and ends with a touch of bitterness on the back go the palate. V enjoyable .
Vermentino is a grape I need to taste more often.
